Small businesses encouraged to consider exporting

The FSB in the North East is encouraging all small businesses in the North East to consider exporting as a route out of the downturn. A report published by the European Commission on 5 July 2010 has found that approximately 25% of small businesses export or have exported in the past three years. The benefits of exporting, the report shows, include greater job creation and increased innovation within small businesses.

NO CLONED MEAT ON EU-MENU

MEPs have rejected proposals by the EU Commission to allow food from cloned animals and their offspring onto the European market. North East Liberal Democrat MEP Fiona Hall is among a majority of MEPs calling for a ban on imported food and semen from cloned animals.

NORTH EAST MEP BACKS BANK BONUS CRACKDOWN

North East MEP Fiona Hall, has welcomed today's vote (7 July 2010) in the European Parliament restricting bankers' bonuses in Europe and seeking to ensure that banks are sitting on stronger capital reserves than before the financial crisis. The Liberal Democrat MEP also heavily criticised UKIP and BNP for voting against the tough new laws.

EURO-MPS GIVE BOAT PASSENGERS NEW RIGHTS

North East Euro MP Fiona Hall has welcomed last night's vote in the European Parliament to give people travelling by boat more rights, from 2012. The Liberal Democrat MEP says that the new rules will give boat passengers similar rights to those which helped thousands of air passengers during the recent disruption caused by the Icelandic volcano.

THERE IS A LIFE AFTER FIFTY

North East MEP Fiona Hall is taking a stand against ageism by signing up to the Newcastle Charter for Changing Age that seeks to change people's attitudes and perceptions towards old age. In the European Parliament she is supporting a Written Declaration calling for EU member states to help people over 55 years back into the labour market.

FIONA SUPPORTS COMMON PET WELFARE STANDARDS IN EUROPE

EU COURT TELLS MOBILE PHONE COMPANIES TO CUT ROAMING CHARGES

A North East MEP has welcomed the European Court of Justice's (ECJ) decision this week to back moves to cut mobile roaming rates by up to 70%. Mobile phone operators including Vodafone and O2 lost their challenge in court to scrap caps on the cost of making calls while abroad.
